Jesus' disciples were getting a crash course in what to expect after Jesus would leave them. One thing Jesus made clear was that his return, the time when he would come as the Son of Man to make the world right, would be sudden, "like a thief in the night." It required his followers to take nothing for granted. This is what the end of Matthew 24 and Matthew 25 are all about.
But Jesus' explanation regarding how the world would be made right, how justice would come to a world gone wrong, had huge implications for how his followers lived until that day of his arrival. Jesus warned them to "be on the alert." This did not mean that we're to sit idly and wait in anticipation until he returns. No, much more so Jesus' parables taught that we're to use the gifts that Jesus has given us to continue his example of loving God and our neighbor, caring for those who need care, and making known his message of the gospel (see Matthew 25:14-30).
This week we look at Matthew 25:31-46. The scene described by Matthew is about Jesus' return but it is as much about how we are to live our lives today under the current Lordship of Jesus.
Join us this Sunday at the Moose Family Lodge (9:30 am) for worship and our study in Matthew's gospel. We look forward to seeing you there.
