Welcome to The MeetingHouse Group which is reading,
(Philip Yancey)
Philip Yancey, regarding his attempts to define and explain God's grace, says, "I do not want the thing (grace) to die. For this reason, I will rely more on stories than on syllogisms. In sum I would far rather convey grace than explain it" (p.16). Put another way, Yancey prefers that his readers experience what grace is rather than define it, to feel it rather than to be able to verbalize it. In this way God's grace is something that we can take hold of with our hands, we can feel it's reality, rather than basing grace on a definition which remains theoretical and which we can not fully appreciate it.
The grace of God can be tough to pinpoint, to verbalize, and thus to identify. This is the starting point of Yancey's attempt in this book to make the grace of God genuine through story and illustration. Yancey feels that the church, in general, may be able to systematically define what God's grace is yet it has fallen short in it's practice of extending this particular character of God to others. If the church can not be graceful to others, has it really understood it's systematic definition of the grace of God?
This MeetingHouse Group will explore and discuss these topics raised by Yancey as well as his method of exploring the grace of God. We'll also be viewing an accompanying DVD hosted by the author.
We'd love to have you be part of the conversation.
